Lock moves into third on SEC’s career TD passes list as Mizzou earns its first road win over a top-15 team since 2014
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mizzou Football defeated No. 13 Florida, 38-17, Saturday afternoon at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The victory was Mizzou's first road win at a top-15 opponent since 2014 when the Tigers defeated No. 13 South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium, 21-20. It matches the highest-ranked team that Mizzou has defeated on the road since toppling No. 7 Georgia in Athens in 2013. Mizzou now leads the all-time series with Florida, 5-3, winning two straight, and now holds an all-time record of 6-2 against teams ranked No. 13 in the AP Top-25 Poll.
Mizzou opened a 21-3 lead with a four-yard TD run by junior RB Damarea Crockett with 6:06 remaining in the second quarter as Crockett was part of a Mizzou offense that rushed for 148 yards on 20 attempts in the opening 30 minutes (7.4 yards per carry). Florida scored late in the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-10 at intermission.
The Tigers then forced stops on Florida's first two possessions of the second half and countered with TDs of their own to open a 35-10 lead to put the game away.
Senior QB Drew Lock moved into third place in SEC history after throwing for three TDs Saturday, moving his career total to 90, passing Florida's Tim Tebow and Chris Leak (88) and Tennessee's Peyton Manning (89). He also passed for 250 yards, moving his career total to 11,089, which moved him past Florida's Danny Wuerffel (10,817 from 1993-96) for sixth in SEC history.
TURNING POINT
After Mizzou broke open with a 21-3 lead in the second quarter, Florida countered with a TD drive of its own to cut the lead to 21-10 at the half, keeping the Gators in the game as they got the ball back to begin the second half. However, Mizzou's defense forced a three-and-out to open the third and Lock responded by finding freshman WR Kam Scott for a 41-yard TD with 10:05 remaining to give Mizzou a 28-10 lead. The defense again bowed up to force a punt and Mizzou marched down the field for another TD, this time a four-yard strike from Lock to senior WR Emanuel Hall, extending Mizzou's lead to 35-10.
TOP TIGERS
- Mizzou senior QB Drew Lock passed for 250 yards on 24-of-32 passing with three TDs. He moved his career passing TD total to 90, now third-most in the SEC. He passed both Florida's Tim Tebow and Chris Leak (88 in their careers) and Tennessee's Peyton Manning (89).
- Junior RB Damarea Crockett ran for 114 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown, recording the eighth career 100+ rushing game of his career.
- Junior LB Cale Garrett tallied 12 tackles, going over the 10-tackle mark for the fourth straight game. He is the first Tiger to accomplish that feat since All-American Kentrell Brothers in 2015 when he led the nation in tackles.
- Senior WR Emanuel Hall tallied four catches for 77 yards and a score in his first game since Sept. 22 vs. Georgia. He had missed the previous four games with a groin injury.
