On a rainy Black Friday when Mizzou honored its 19 seniors during the final home game of 2018, Mizzou's defense showed out in a 38-0 shutout win. During the program's first shutout since 2010, the defense set multiple season-highs and helped Mizzou secure its ninth consecutive November win.
The shutout was Mizzou's second shutout since joining the SEC and its first shutout in a conference game since Mizzou beat Iowa State 14-0 on Nov. 20, 2010.
Senior LB Terez Hall ended his Mizzou career in fashion on senior. Midway through the second quarter, Arkansas QB Ty Storey attempted to check down to a running back over the middle as he was under immense pressure, a recurring theme for Mizzou's defense all day. Hall was the benefactor as Storey put the ball right in Hall's chest, and he hauled it in for his first career interceptio
"He just threw it directly at me and I was praying to God about it too like I need a pick," Hall said following the game. "I don't know how I went a whole Mizzou Football career without one. Last time I had a pick was in high school."
Hall also tallied a sack during Mizzou's victory Friday afternoon, one of a season-high 5.0 for the Mizzou defense.
Hall's play was part of a Mizzou defense that was a force during the first half surrendering only 41 yards of total offense. While Hall's play helped set up a Mizzou score, the defense wound up scoring on its own, courtesy of DT Jordan Elliott and DE Akial Byers.
In the second quarter, Elliott slipped through the offensive line to get hands on Storey for a strip sack, his second sack of the game at that point. The ball rolled into the end zone after several players tried to grab ball. Ultimately, Mizzou sophomore DE Akial Byers for a defensive touchdown.
"I see me and Jordan (Elliott) playing a big role in the years to come. We have a lot of seniors leaving, so we expect to play a big role on the defensive line moving forward," Byers said. "We're just going to step up and take that role."
It was the second consecutive game that Mizzou had a scoop-and-score TD after not having such a play since 2014. Sophomore S Joshuah Bledsoe scored his first career touchdown on a scoop-and-score fumble recovery during last week's game at Tennessee.
Elliott was the star on defense all day. He recorded a career-high 3.0 sacks after not recording one all season before Friday. It was the first time a Mizzou player has recorded three sacks in a single game since Marcell Frazier did it against Arkansas on Nov. 25, 2016. He exceeded another season-high with five tackles.
"It's rare to have three tackles as a defensive lineman," Elliott said. "It's a blessing. Things just fell into place and I just finished. I couldn't do any of it without my teammates."
Elliott's three sacks helped Mizzou finish the game with season-highs in sacks (5.0) and tackles for loss (8.0). Mizzou's defense also chopped in six pass breakups and Hall's interception as Arkansas moved the ball into the red zone just once and finished the game with just 187 total yards, which were the fewest allowed by Mizzou since an October game against Florida in 2013.
Mizzou finished the regular season 8-4 and awaits its bowl selection. ESPN will broadcast the bowl selections starting at 11 a.m. on Dec. 3.
