COLUMBIA, MO. – The University of Missouri Women's Golf program has signed prep standout Sophia Yoemans (pronounced YAY-muns) of Red Wing, Minn. to a National Letter of Intent, as announced today. One of the top youth golfers in the nation, Yoemans is a two-time defending Minnesota Girls State Champion, winning medalist honors for Red Wing High School in both 2017 and 2018. The 143rd-ranked golfer nationally overall and 58th in the class of 2019 according to Junior Golf Scoreboard, Yoemans will go for a Minnesota state championship three-peat this coming spring for Red Wing.
Yoemans swept through the Minnesota prep post-season this fall as a junior, claiming conference and sectional medalist honors to go with her second-straight state title. She broke the Minnesota state finals record with a two-day 129 total, firing rounds of 63 and 66 to win.
She's also achieved an impressive playing resume on the national level, as she's posted numerous top-10 finishes at various American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) and Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) events – including three wins. Yoemans also is a two-time qualifier for the USGA Junior Girls Championship, advancing to nationals in both 2017 and 2018. This past June, she won the 2018 Minnesota Girls Junior PGA Championship (71-73 = 144) and advanced to nationals, where she made the cut and placed 36th overall.
"Sophia caught our eye last summer and we immediately hit it off," said Priesmeyer. "She has great length in her game that will help set her up for success in the SEC. Sophia had a great summer and absolutely blew away the Minnesota state championship record this spring with amazing scores of 63 and 66. She's used to shooting under par and we believe she will transition into college golf very well. We're thrilled that Sophia will be joining our Mizzou Golf family very soon," said Priesmeyer.
"Mizzou stood out to me from the start," said Yoemans. "The more I learned about it and got to know the coaches and the school, it just seemed like the place I was meant to be. The family atmosphere there is special and something I'm looking forward to being part of, and the Mizzou campus is beautiful, I can't wait to get there," she said.
An honor roll student at Red Wing High School, and a member of National Honor Society, Yoemans has an interest in studying Health Science at Mizzou.
