Game Recap: Soccer |

@MizzouSoccer falls in road game at No. 8 South Carolina, 1-0

Late game offensive flurry not enough to push the game to overtime

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Mizzou Soccer (5-9-2, 2-5-1) fell on the road at No. 8 South Carolina (12-2-1, 6-1-1), losing 1-0 to the Gamecocks at Stone Stadium on Thursday night. The Tigers were shutout for the ninth time this season, and this loss was the team's third straight road defeat. The Tigers hung with the Gamecocks for most of the match, but for the sixth straight game, the outcome was decided by one goal. Mizzou is now 3-8 in such games this season.

The Tigers nearly got back into the game in the final moments, as their best two scoring opportunities came in the 87th and 88th minutes. The first came off of a deflection, and sophomore Bella Alessi (Fort Collins, Colo.) was in the right place at the right time. She lobbed the ball with her back towards goal, and it nearly found the upper corner, but it was punched away by the goalkeeper. Moments later, junior forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) launched a shot from about 30 yards and it struck the post.

TURNING POINT

The Tigers and Gamecocks traded chances at the beginning of the match, but Carolina was able to get the winner early, scoring the only goal of the game in the 20th minute.

Gamecock midfielder Luciana Zullo was through on goal, bypassing the Tiger defense on a nice run courtesy of a nifty through ball. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Illinois) courageously came off her line to challenge Zullo, but she chipped the ball perfectly over the diving goalkeeper into the back of the net. The goal was the difference in the game, as South Carolina would hold on to win, 1-0.

TOP TIGERS

  • Dossey had three saves against the Gamecocks, giving her 64 for this season and 187 in her career.
  • Junior forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) and Alessi were the only two Tigers to place shots on goal. They each had two in the game.
  • Sophomore midfielder Cassidy Nurnberger (New Haven, Mo.) and sophomore defender Momola Adesanmi (Sugar Land, Tx.) played all 90 minutes.
