IOWA CITY, Iowa - Junior Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) came up just short in the 2018 ITA Central Region doubles championship match Tuesday morning during final day competition at the event.
The Tiger duo, who entered the ITA Central Region Championship seeded eighth in doubles, advanced all the way to the title match before suffering a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Tulsa's Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner on Tuesday. Before the title match, Middlebrooks and Wright had reeled off five wins at the Championship. They were the first Tigers to play in the doubles championship match since 2002, when Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova claimed the second of two Central Region doubles championships.
Overall, Middlebrooks and Wright are 9-2 overall in the fall season and have a 27-8 career record playing together in doubles.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Colt Gaston
"Ellie and Mackenzy found hard today but it just didn't go our way. A lot of credit to Tulsa, as they played a great match and were the more aggressive team. Our region is a strong one, so for us to be around that many good players and compete for a championship today was a step in the right direction. As a team, I thought we competed hard and showed a lot of progress the last few days. However, we still have some work to do. We look forward to taking the positives out of this tournament and building on it this week in practice.
