Four Tigers undefeated over three matches in N.Y.
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Mizzou Tennis team wrapped up a perfect road trip with a pair of wins Sunday afternoon at the Reis Tennis Complex, defeating Army and Binghamton by identical 4-0 scores.
As they have all season, the Tigers (5-0) started the morning strong by winning the doubles point. Sophomore Serena Nash (Bradford, England) and senior Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) registered a 6-3 win, and the team of sophomore Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and freshman Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win.
Mizzou then quickly won the first three singles matches to clinch the win. Freshman Taylor Gruber (Spicewood, Texas) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win, Middlebrooks posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory, then Wright captured the match with for the Tigers with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
In the finale vs. the Bearcats, it was more of the same. Nash & Raley swept through their match at No. 1 doubles without allowing a game, and the all-freshman squad of Gruber and freshman Ally Noback (Alpharetta, Ga.), making her dual-match debut for the Tigers, posted a 6-1 win to clinch the doubles point. Middlebrooks & Wright barely missed out on their fifth dual win of the season, as their match was suspended while leading, 5-0. They still remain undefeated on the season.
In singles, the Tigers took little time to sweep through the first three decisions. Raley blitzed through her match, 6-0, 6-0, while Nash won hers by a 6-1, 6-1 count. Gruber then closed out the weekend when her 6-3, 6-0 win gave Mizzou (5-0) the match-clinching win.
"I was proud of the girls for coming out and showing some great energy today in both matches," said Head Coach Colt Gaston. "We have been trying to get off to better starts, and I thought we did a good job of that today. Overall it was a great weekend for us, and we look forward to continuing to build next week."
Mizzou wraps up a dominant weekend in upstate New York: Over the weekend's three contests, four Mizzou players – Raley, Nash, Middlebrooks & Wright – were undefeated on the weekend, with each winning two singles and two doubles matches. Out of 27 total matches vs. Cornell, Army & Binghamton, the Tigers dropped just three.
