COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field senior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) added to her list of accomplishments again Thursday, as she was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division I Women's First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Schweizer is the 15th CoSIDA Academic All-American in program history (male and female), and the first since Shannon Leinert earned Third Team honors in 2010.
Schweizer, a Health Sciences major, has maintained a 3.418 GPA and is scheduled to graduate following the fall 2018 semester. She recently finished up her collegiate career at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (June 6-9), where she collected her sixth national title and her ninth and 10th All-America honors. Schweizer began the NCAA meet by finishing third in the 10,000m run with a time of 32:14.94, then followed up that performance by winning the 5000m run with a time of 15:41.58.
With the NCAA title, Schweizer is just the second woman in NCAA history to win back-to-back NCAA titles in the indoor and outdoor 5000m runs in the same two-year span, following Arizona's Amy Skieresz in 1997-98. Schweizer's six national titles are the most among any athlete in Mizzou history, while her 10 All-America honors match Kearsten Peoples for the most in program history.
In addition, Schweizer has been named to the SEC Honor Roll five times, and was named to the SEC Community Service Team in May after logging 36 volunteer hours at the SPLAT Mud Run, Hear of America Marathon, Susan G. Komen Race and the Columbia Food Bank. A role model to young girls in the Columbia community, Schweizer also helped coach a youth running club at a nearby Columbia elementary school.
