COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Cross Country was recognized for its hard work in the classroom Friday, as both the men's and women's teams received the 2017 NCAA Division-I All-Academic Team honor, announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA). In addition, Mizzou senior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) and redshirt senior Megan Cunningham (Eureka, Mo.) received the All-Academic Individual distinction.
To qualify for the All-Academic Individual honor, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and finish in the top-25 at the NCAA Regional Championship, or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships. To qualify for the All-Academic Team honor, a team must have a combined cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Mizzou has received the All-Academic team every season dating back to 2006 (no cross country release in 2005).
Schweizer, who has a 3.417 GPA as a health sciences major, collected her second consecutive All-America honor and sixth career All-America honor overall at the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships (Nov. 18), finishing 11th overall. Prior to the NCAA meet, Schweizer won her second consecutive SEC (Oct. 27) and NCAA Midwest Regional (Nov. 10) titles. Schweizer was named the USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2016.
Cunningham, who maintains a 3.897 GPA as a biology major, earned NCAA All-Midwest Regional honors this season after finishing 12th in Ames, Iowa. Cunningham carried over her strong cross country campaign into the indoor season, as the Tiger senior recorded the fifth-fastest program time in the indoor 3000m run at the Vanderbilt Invitational (Jan. 20), crossing the finish line at 9:19.07.
