Ismail and Santos were defeated by California’s top duo
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis' top doubles duo, junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) and senior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal), fell, 2-6, 2-6 to California's Maya Jansen and Maegan Manesse in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Doubles Tournament. The loss brings the duo's 2016-17 campaign to a close.
Ismail and Santos were the first Mizzou pairing to earn a berth in the NCAA Doubles Tournament since Urksa Juric and Katka Sevcikova in 2003. The duo finished 12-6 overall as partners, with no losses coming against opponents that are unranked in the latest ITA National Doubles poll.
California's Jansen and Manesse jumped ahead 3-0 early in the opening set, but Ismail and Santos battled back with a break and a hold to cut the deficit to 2-3. Jansen and Manesse responded though and rattled off three consecutive games to claim the first set, 6-2. California's top pairing maintained its momentum in the second set and polished off the match victory in straight sets.
Ismail and Santos racked up seven wins over ranked pairings during the season, including a pair over Top-10 opponents. They finished the regular season ranked No. 10 in the ITA National Doubles rankings, the highest ranking for a Mizzou doubles duo since Juric and Sevcikova in 2003.
