INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Michael Chadwick (Charlotte, North Carolina) earned a runner-up finish in the 100 free to help the Mizzou men's swimming and diving team place ninth overall with 179.5 points at the 2017 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The ninth-place finish marks the second-highest ever for the program, one spot off last year's placement of eighth.
In the 100 free, Chadwick touched second and became only the fourth person in history to go under 41 seconds with a 40.95. His swim, which obliterated his own school record, also went down as the sixth-fastest swim ever. Chadwick's finish marked his third-consecutive top six finish in the event, as he placed fifth as a sophomore in 2015 and sixth as a junior in 2016.
"That (race) was almost a perfect storm," Chadwick said. It was almost like redemption for me with a year of not doing what I know I can. I finished and I didn't know what to do, I didn't know how to celebrate. The word I'd use is surreal. I didn't even look at the clock, I looked right at my coaches and I saw them cheering."
Chadwick concluded his Missouri career as the most decorated Tiger in program history, as an 11-time first team and 11-time honorable mention All-American. Five of those first team honors came as an individual, including four over the last two seasons.
In the final swim of his Tiger career, senior Carter Griffin (Parker, Colorado) claimed his first individual first team All-America honor. The senior finished six in the 200 back in 1:40.20 after breaking his own school record with a 1:39.46 in morning prelims.
Over the four-day meet, the Tigers compiled five individual first team All-America honors and one individual honorable mention accolade. Additionally, three Mizzou relays claimed first team selections and two more relays earned honorable mention awards. The Tigers also set nine school records.
Missouri closed the meet placing 10th in the 400 free relay in a school record time of 2:48.95. The team of sophomore Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba), Chadwick, senior Andrew Sansoucie (Wentzville, Missouri) and sophomore Sam Coffman (Centennial, Colorado) dropped a second and a half off their prelims swim and almost three seconds off the program mark coming into the meet.
"When I got here we were a young class trying to build a program," Chadwick said. "We brought our team a long way. All of the seniors agree that we left our program in great hands and we're excited to see what Mizzou swimming and diving does in the future."
Texas claimed its second-consecutive team title with 542 total points. California placed second (349), Florida third (294.5), North Carolina State fourth (272.5), Stanford fifth (242), Southern California sixth (237), Indiana seventh (229.5) and Georgia eighth (183).
