INDIANAPOLIS – The Mizzou men's swimming and diving team posted three top seven finishes, including runner-up honors from senior Fabian Schwingenschlogl (Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany) in the 100 breast, during day three action at the 2017 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The Tigers sit ninth as a team with 135.5 points with one day of competition remaining.
The defending champion in the 100 breast, Schwingenschlogl just missed a repeat after a late charge by winner Will Licon of Texas. The Tiger had a slight lead at the 75 yard mark but a strong final 25 yards by Licon gave the Longhorn the win. Schwingenschlogl's finals time of 50.77 broke his own Mizzou record and made him the third-fastest performer in history in the event. Additionally, his finish made him a four-time first team All-American in the 100 breast, as he earned the honors in 2016 at Mizzou and in 2015 and 2014 at Western Kentucky.
Missouri also placed fourth in the 200 medley relay in a school record time of 1:22.48. Freshman Daniel Hein (Sycamore, Illinois), Schwingenschlogl, senior Andrew Sansoucie (Wentzville, Missouri) and senior Michael Chadwick's (Charlotte, North Carolina) finals time dropped nearly two seconds off the program mark entering the meet and was only 0.2 off the previous NCAA record of 1:22.27.
Earning the first individual first team All-America honor of his career was Sansoucie in the 100 fly. The senior, who finished 14th in the same event a season ago, touched seventh in the championship final in a time of 45.76. Sansoucie is a five-time first team All-American on Tiger relays but saved his best for last to claim individual honors in his final collegiate season.
"It's been an extremely fast meet on the relays," Mizzou Head Coach Greg Rhodenbaugh said. "We're going as fast as I thought we possibly could, which just shows you how fast everyone else is. I saw us be two-tenths off the NCAA record and get fourth."
Also competing for Mizzou on the day were senior Carter Griffin (Parker, Colorado) and sophomores Kyle Goodwin (Aurora, Colorado) and Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba). Griffin placed 23rd in the 100 back, Schreuders 23rd in the 200 free and Goodwin 25th on the 3-meter springboard.
