INDIANAPOLIS – Two Tigers and a relay claimed honorable mention All-America honors to highlight day two action Thursday at the 2017 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. The Tigers also set three new school records during the day.
After day two competition, the Tigers sit 16th as a team with 34 points.
Redshirt senior Lauren Reedy (Rochester Hills, Michigan) and junior Kira Zubar (Chasta, Minnesota) earned individual honorable mention accolades with their performances on Thursday.
Reedy won the 1-meter consolation final with 319.1, bolstered by a 63.0 on her fourth dive, to finish ninth overall. It marked the second honorable mention All-America honor of her career, as Reedy placed ninth on 3-meter in 2015 as a junior.
Earning her first All-America honor, Zubar finished 14th in the 500 free in a finals time of 4:39.96. She broke her own school record in the event in prelims after a time of 4:39.68 and was just off that time in the consolation final. Zubar placed 60th in the event a year ago as a sophomore and was seeded 29th heading into the 2017 Championships but improved on both for her 14th-place finish.
Additionally, the 400 medley relay team of seniors Nadine Laemmler (Wackersdorf, Bavaria, Germany), and Katharine Ross (Des Moines, Iowa) and juniors Erin Metzger-Seymour (Westminster, Colorado) and Hannah Stevens (Lexington, Ohio) claimed honorable mention honors after winning the consolation final. The foursome took ninth overall in a school record time of 3:29.12.
On the opening leg of the 400 medley relay, Laemmler posted a personal-best 50.54 to break Mizzou's 100 back mark. Laemmler's previous best was a 51.14 set at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
"Overall we're swimming well," Mizzou Head Coach Greg Rhodenbaugh said. "Not everything went our way today but we did enough. We did great in the 400 medley relay, including a school record. Today put us in a good spot going into the stroke days, where we excel."
Other individual competitors during day two were junior Sharli Brady (Burlington, Kentucky), senior Ellie Suek (Eden Prairie, Minnesota) and junior Madeline McKernan (Montgomery, Texas). Brady finished 23rd in the 200 IM, Suek was 51st in the 200 IM and McKernan took 45th on 1-meter.
The Tigers opened the day with a 22nd-place finish in the 200 free relay, where freshman Haley Hynes (Lee's Summit, Missouri), Stevens, sophomore Maddie Gehrke (Clive, Iowa) and senior Victoria Trost (Johnston, Iowa) swam a 1:29.49.
Day three action at the Championships continue on Friday, March 17 with swimming prelims at 10 a.m. ET and diving prelims at 12:30 p.m. ET.
