FORT MYERS, Fla. – Mizzou's offense exploded for its most runs since March 24, 2010, as it took game one of a doubleheader, 27-9, over Eastern Michigan Saturday at City of Palms Park. Mizzou head coach Steve Bieser won his first game as the Tiger skipper as it marked the first win of the season for his team.
In all, Mizzou had 12 players tally hits with all but three players hitting safely. Of the 12, seven had multiple hit performances, highlighted by junior catcher Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.), who tallied a game-high five with a double, an RBI and two walks. Junior Nelson Mompierre (Miami, Fla.) drove in a game-high five runs while seven Tigers finished with multiple RBI in the game. Junior OF Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Fla.) drove in four runs with a pair of doubles.
Freshman OF Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) hit his first career homer to highlight a Mizzou team that pounded out 10 extra-base hits, including seven doubles. It was the most doubles hit by a Mizzou team since 2007 against St. Louis on March 14 that year. Nine different players tallied an extra-base hit in the win. It was also the first time Mizzou had more than 20 hits since 2008.
It was an eventful first inning in game one as EMU took advantage of an error for three runs. But Mizzou countered with a five-spot in its half, highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore 1B Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.), his first multi-RBI game since March 16 of last season.
After a quite second inning for both teams, EMU tacked on a run in the top of the third before Mizzou added three more in its half of the frame. Sophomore OF Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) slapped a two-run single as the big hit to break the inning open. That extended Mizzou's lead to 8-4 after three.
Mizzou starter Michael Plassmeyer (St. Louis, Mo.), who earned the win, settled in and tossed an easy 1-2-3 fourth inning, aided by a diving catch in right field by Harris, who made his second spectacular catch of the day with the effort.
Mizzou broke the game open after Plassmeyer hung a pair of zeroes on the scoreboard. After scoring six in the fourth, the first eight batters reached in the fifth, sparked by the first career homer by Misner. Mizzou put up eight runs in the inning and two more in the sixth on Ian Nelson's (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) first career triple to extend the lead to 24-4.
Bryce Montes De Oca (Lawrence, Kan.) pitched in relief, his first appearance since tossing 0.1 innings at City of Palms Park a year ago before being sidelined with an elbow injury. He tossed a shutout sixth inning before walking in a run in the seventh inning, ending his outing. EMU plated four in that inning, but couldn't close the gap much as Mizzou tacked on three more in the eighth to seal the win, 27-9.
