Tigers led by Barnett's double-double, 21 points and 11 rebounds
ORLANDO, Fla. - In the championship game of the 2017 AdvoCare Invitational, Mizzou Men's Basketball (5-2, 0-0 SEC) dropped a close contest to No. 23 West Virginia, 83-79, on Sunday night inside the HP Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Tigers got caught up in the Mountaineers' press in the game's final minutes, as West Virginia ended the game on a 31-11 run to take the tournament title.
Turning Point
The aforementioned run that West Virginia mounted to seize control of the game from the Tigers was fueled by costly Mizzou turnovers. While the Tigers played stout defense against the Mountaineers throughout the evening's contest, the takeaways forced by WVU were tough to overcome. Martin's group kept WVU bottled up in the first half with just a 33-percent success rate on field goal attempts. The tide turned as the second half wore on. From 7:19-6:15 on the second half clock, the Black & Gold committed five turnovers that helped even the game.
Top Tigers
With 21 points and 11 rebounds, senior forward Jordan Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded his second career double-double after scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds against Lipscomb last season (Dec. 29, 2016). The 21-point output is the first game this season and fourth career game Barnett has scored at least 20 points. The senior Tiger filled the stat sheet, as he also dished out three assists and snagged two steals.
Senior guard Kassius Robertson (Toronto, Ontario) scored 13 points (3-of-7 FG, 3-of-5 3 PT, 4-of-6 FT) in the game, his sixth time this season and 72nd time in his career he has reached double-digits. Robertson connected on three three-pointers in the game, the fifth time this season (third consecutive) and 68th time in his career he has connected on multiple threes.
Freshman forward Jontay Porter (Columbia, Mo.) continued his stellar beginning to his college career by recording nine points, nine rebounds, five blocks, two assists and one steal. Porter's five blocks are the most by a Tiger since Johnathan Williams III had five against Texas A&M on March 5, 2014. Porter has now recorded a block in six of seven games this season and is averaging 2.3 per game.
