TAMPERE, FINLAND – Mizzou Wrestling up-and-coming redshirt freshman and Missouri Wrestling Foundation grappler Wyatt Koelling (Kaysville, Utah) will represent Team USA at the Junior World Championship in Tampere, Finland on Sunday. Koelling will compete in the 84 kg (185 pounds) Greco-Roman division and will be one of four wrestlers to don the red, white and blue for Team USA on Sunday.
The preliminary rounds will begin at 10 a.m. local time (2 a.m. CT), with the medal matches to begin at 6 p.m. local time (10 a.m. CT). TrackWrestling.com will be on site in Finland to provide broadcast coverage of the event.
Koelling clinched his spot on the U.S. Junior National Team after winning the 84 kg bracket at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas in April. Koelling breezed through his competition in way to three technical falls in the first three rounds, winning by a combined score of 31-6. His opening bout was the only match that went to the second period, as he won 9-0 in 2:33 over Chauncey Garigan (Inland Northwest Wrestling Training Center) in the quarterfinals and 8-0 in 0:37 over Austin Chaon (NMO-OTS) in the semifinals. In the finals, Koelling defeated Thomas Brackett (West Tennessee Takedown Club) by the score of 2-0.
During a redshirt season at Mizzou, Koelling went 14-9 and placed in two open tournaments. The Kaysville, Utah native finished third at 197 pounds at the Maryville Brand Kaufman Open (Nov. 12) and fifth at the Roger Denker Open (Jan. 22). Koelling won five matches by fall, one by technical fall and one by major decision.
