ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Mizzou Wrestling will send three wrestlers to the semifinals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships as redshirt senior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), redshirt junior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee (Reno, Nev.) and senior 197-pounder J'den Cox all won quarterfinals bouts on Friday at the Scottrade Center. With the victories, all three wrestlers clinched spots on the podium as NCAA All-Americans.
The wins were historic for Cox and Mayes, as Cox became the second four-time All-American in program history (Ben Askren, 2004-07), while Mayes became the fifth three-time All-American in program history (Cox, 2014-17; Ben Askren, 2004-07; Drake Houdashelt, 2013-15; Max Askren, 2008-10).
Following the session, Mizzou sits in sixth place in the team race with 43.5 points. Two other wrestlers, redshirt freshman 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.), lost quarterfinals bouts, but are still alive on the consolation side of the bracket.
In his quarterfinals match, Cox recorded his third bonus point victory of the tournament, defeating Rider's No. 8 seed Ryan Wolfe by way of a 10-1 major decision. Cox continued his consistency by scoring one takedown in each of the first two periods before tacking on two in the final period, with riding time ensuring the 10-1 outcome. Wrestling in the semifinals for the fourth consecutive year, Cox will face the No. 3 seed, Virginia Tech's Jared Haught.
Mayes and Virginia Tech's No. 6 seed Solomon Chishko were scoreless heading into the third period before Mayes was able to break open the scoring with an escape. He added a takedown period to clinch the bout, 4-2. Lavallee controlled the majority of his quarterfinal match against Stanford's Paul Fox, leading 2-0 heading into the third before scoring another takedown to win, 6-2. The two Tigers will wrestle in the semifinals for the first time in their careers, with Mayes matching up against Northern Iowa's No. 7 seed Max Thomsen, while Lavallee will face Cornell's No. 7 seed Dylan Palacio.
Eierman and Lewis each had heartbreaking losses in the quarterfinals, as Eierman came up just short of upsetting No. 1 seed Dean Heil from Oklahoma State in a 6-5 result, while Lewis gave up a takedown in the final seconds to lose to Penn State's No. 3 seed Vincenzo Joseph, 6-5. Both will wrestle in tonight's wrestlebacks needing two wins to earn All-America status.
In the consolation round, redshirt sophomore 133-pounder John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.) won his first bout by way of major decision, 13-3 over Appalachian State's Colby Smith, but fell in his second match with a fall from Oregon State's Joseph Palmer.
The five Tigers still alive in the tournament will wrestle in tonight's session, which is slated to begin at 7 p.m. CT with a broadcast on ESPN and a live stream on ESPN3.com and through the WatchESPN app.
