AUBURN, Ala. – The Mizzou soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 20 Auburn Friday night at the Auburn Soccer Stadium in Auburn, Ala. The loss dropped Missouri's record to 8-4-0 overall and 3-2-0 in Southeastern Conference action, while Auburn improved to 8-4-0 and 4-1-0.
After a wide open but scoreless first half, Auburn broke the deadlock with a goal in the 64th minute. The home Tigers flicked a header over Missouri sophomore keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) for the game-winner.
Mizzou had the better chances early, with two near misses from junior Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.). In the eighth minute, Johnson's shot hit off the inside of the left post and rolled the length of the goal line without going into the net. Then in the 27th minute of action, she turned a defender and got off a shot but the attempt was thwarted by a diving save from the Auburn goalkeeper.
Senior Melanie Donaldson (Florissant, Mo.) had Mizzou's best scoring chance of the second half when she ran onto a ball and unleashed a 25-yard strike. However, her shot curled to the right of the goal and bounced a foot wide of the post.
Missouri had a 13-11 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
The Tigers return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 6, when the team travels to College Station, Texas, to take on Texas A&M at 7:30 p.m. CT.
