Luebbert’s Header Gives @MizzouSoccer 2-1 Win over Colorado

The Tiger freshman’s third goal gives Mizzou its second straight OT win

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Freshman forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) headed in a set piece in OT to give Mizzou Soccer (3-1-0) the edge over Colorado (2-1-0) on Sunday night at Walton Stadium, 2-1. The win was Mizzou's second straight OT win. Luebbert now leads the team with three goals in four games this year, including two game-winners.

The Tigers broke through in the 94th minute when senior defender Erin Webb (Castle Rock, Colo.) sent in a ball off a set piece from about 25 yards out on the right side of the goal. The ball went to the far post to Johnson, who headed the ball across the goal once more where Luebbert was waiting to send the ball into the top right with a dazzling header. The Tigers improve to 2-1 in overtime games this season.

Mizzou was able to possess the ball in the attacking third for long periods of the game leading to 12 corner kicks, the most of the season to date. Mizzou has had 45 corner kick opportunities while only allowing 11.

Mizzou opened the scoring early with a clever finish by junior midfielder Kaitlyn Clark (Liberty, Mo). Clark intercepted a pass in the attacking third of the field and blew by the defenders before sneaking a ground ball across the goal to beat the Colorado keeper in the fourth minute of the game. The unassisted goal was Clark's first of the season and fifth of her career, to give Mizzou an early, 1-0, lead.

Colorado responded in the 24th minute with a blast into the upper left corner of the goal by Sarah Kinzer.

The second half saw a flurry of chances for Mizzou, including five shots, two on goal, and four corner kicks over the span of 11 minutes. The best chance among them came from Clark in the 66th minute. Luebbert broke away on the right side of the field and delivered a cross to a wide open Clark on the far post. Clark was able to settle the ball and fired a shot, but it went wide on the lower right side of the goal to keep the score tied at one.

Colorado had its chances in the second half including a dangerous run by Danica Evans in the 83rd minute. Evans fired a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by Webb. The Tigers cleared away the resulting corner kick to maintain the 1-1 score.

Junior forward Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a golden opportunity in the 88th minute on a breakaway chance. Johnson used her speed to win a loose ball in the attacking third and found herself one on one with the keeper in the six-yard box only to see her shot blocked and the rebound cleared away.

Mizzou takes the pitch again on Friday, September 2 at 6:30 p.m. CT for a game against San Francisco. SEC Network + will provide the broadcast from Walton Stadium.
