
Santos Wins ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award

Santos will compete in NCAA Tournament May 25-30
TEMPE, Ariz. – Mizzou Tennis junior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) is the recipient of the International Tennis Association/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award for the central region, it was announced by the conference office on Monday. Last week, Santos was selected to the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships, becoming the first representative from Mizzou to compete in the National Tournament since 2003.
The award dates back to 1982, is awarded at each level of NCAA Tennis (Division I, II, III, NAIA, and JUCO) and is given to players to have "exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements." Santos is one of 12 recipients to receive the award at the Division I level. National awards winners will be announced Tuesday, May 24.
The Portugal native has posted 97 wins in her career, including an impressive 52-28 mark in doubles play. Santos recorded six wins over opponents currently ranked in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Singles Rankings this season and was named to the Second Team All-SEC on April 27. Off the court, Santos is very active around the Columbia community, volunteering for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Girl Scouts Love Yourself Day, Mizzou Moves, the Food Bank, and Caleb's Pitch.
The NCAA Tournament will take place May 19-30 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Singles competition is scheduled to begin May 25 following the conclusion of the team championship.
