Mizzou marks its best start in program history since 2010-11
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis improved to 6-0 on the season with two more wins on Saturday, marking its best start to a season since winning its first five contests in the 2010-11 season. The Tigers narrowly snuck past Saint Louis in the first match of the day, 4-3, before dominating Missouri State in the night cap, 7-0.
Two Tigers, senior Kelli Hine (New Braunfels, Texas) and junior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) remained perfect for the spring season with four victories on the day. The duo, ranked No. 56 in the nation by ITATennis.com, recorded two wins in doubles play on the day, before each picking up two wins in singles play.
Mizzou won the doubles point against the Billikens following wins from Hine/Santos and the team of sophomore Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) and freshman Turner Yates (Jackson, Miss.). After splitting the first four singles matches, Mizzou led 3-2 with Raley on the court in the No. 5 singles match. Raley took the first set, 6-3, over Kelsey King, before playing a nail-biting second set. Raley need an extra game to put the match away, outlasting King, 7-5, to clinch the victory for the Tigers.
In the second match of the day, Mizzou blanked the Bears of Missouri State, 7-0. The Tigers won the double point thanks to wins from Hine/Santos and junior Brittany Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.)/sophomore Brianna Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.). Mizzou was relentless in singles playing, yielding only 14 games total in six matches. Brianna Lashway clinched the win for the Tigers at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Miranda Poile. Yates picked up her first singles victory of the spring season with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Faty Khamissi at No. 6 singles.
Mizzou will put its undefeated record on the line in a matchup with Kansas State on Wednesday, Feb. 10. The Tigers host the Wildcats at the Mizzou Tennis Complex, beginning at 5 p.m. CT.
