Mizzou improves to 10-1 with wins over Savannah State and Mercer
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Mizzou Tennis (10-1) picked up two nonconference wins on Friday, defeating Savannah State (0-7), 7-0, in the morning, and Mercer (2-4), 4-0, in the evening. With the victories, the Tigers improve to 10-1 on the season.
Mizzou picked up the doubles point over Savannah State after wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions, both by a score of 6-0. Sophomore Brianna Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Nigel, Calif.) picked the win at the No. 2 position and junior Brittany Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) at the No. 3 position.
The Tigers finished off the sweep of Savannah State in singles play, taking each match in straight sets. Senior Kelli Hine (New Braunfels, Texas) played a close match with Elizabeth Geronimo at No. 2, but narrowly pulled out the 6-3, 7-5 win. Newly added walk-on Kadi Fauble (Quincy, Ill.) played in her first match as a Tiger at No. 6 singles, defeating Tiffany Williams, 6-1, 6-0.
Mizzou's No. 2 and 3 doubles team each earned their second victories of the day in doubles play against Mercer to win the doubles point. Brianna Lashway and Spearman won 6-1, yielding only one game on the day in their two doubles victories.
In singles play, the Tigers picked up three wins to clinch the match. Hine, Brianna Lashway, and Brittany Lashway won matches at No. 2, 3, and 5, respectively. Hine made quick work of Xandra Founger, 6-1, 6-0, to remain perfect on the spring season in singles play, improving to 11-0.
