The Mizzou soccer team reached a number of milestones in an impressive 2016 season that concluded with an 11-7-2 overall and 6-4-1 record in Southeastern Conference action. Take a quick look back at Missouri's season in review.
MIZZOU EARNS SEVENTH NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE
The Tigers returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and earned their seventh berth in program history, including the third NCAA appearance in the last five seasons. Mizzou was pitted against Kansas in the first round on Nov. 13 in a rematch of the Tiger's 3-1 win over the Jayhawks in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The match was even, with each team registering three saves and eight fouls. The Tigers had a 12-6 edge in corners and the Jayhawks a narrow 17-14 advantage in shots over the course of the game. After 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Kansas broke through in the 101st minute to record the win.
COMEBACKS APLENTY IN 2016
The Tigers were never out of contests in 2016, highlighted by the three wins for the team after trailing by two goals. Twice during the year Mizzou recovered from 2-0 deficits to comeback to notch wins, first a 3-2 win over Central Arkansas in the season opener, then a 4-3 victory at Georgia on Oct. 23. Additionally, Mizzou trailed No. 15 Florida 3-1 in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals but used goals in the 61st and 62nd minutes to send the game to overtime.
Prior to the season, Mizzou's win after trailing 2-0 was a 3-2 defeat over Kansas on Oct. 21, 2011, when the Tigers scored three times in the final six minutes of regulation.
LUEBBERT NAMED SEC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Freshman Sarah Luebbert became only the second Tiger to claim conference freshman or newcomer of the year honors after she was named the 2016 SEC Freshman of the Year on Oct. 30. The forward led Mizzou with 24 points on 10 goals and four assist, the highest point and goal totals by a Tiger since Kristin Andrighetto had 27 and 10 in 2009. Luebbert's totals also ranked second on both Mizzou's all-time freshman points and goals lists. Additionally, Luebbert finished the season ranked fifth among SEC players in goals per game (0.56) and sixth in points per game (1.33).
In addition to her yearly award, Luebbert also earned spots on the All-SEC second team, SEC All-Freshman Team, NSCAA All-South Region third team and was on TopDrawerSoccer's Freshman Best XI second team.
OFFENSE GALORE
Mizzou increased its goal output from 25 a season ago to 37 in 2016, a 12-goal difference over the one-year span. The Tigers also received goals from every class this past season, something that didn't happen a year ago. In 2016, the junior class led the way with 15 goals, followed by 12 from the freshmen, six from seniors and three from sophomores.
TIGERS OPEN SEC PLAY IN STYLE
The Tigers opened SEC play with a memorable 5-0 win at Ole Miss on Sept. 9. The five goals were the most Mizzou has ever scored in an SEC match and the most for the team since a 5-1 win over Pacific on Aug. 23, 2013. Five different Tigers found the back of the yet against the Rebels.
DONALDSON, CLARK, SELAIDEN ALSO EARN CONFERENCE HONORS
Three other Tigers were also honored by the conference in a vote of the league's coaches. Senior Melanie Donaldson claimed a spot on the All-SEC first team and junior Kaitlyn Clark and senior Lauren Selaiden were named to the second team.
A midfielder, Donaldson claimed All-SEC honors for the second time in her career, as she was named to the second team in 2014. As a senior, she started all 19 games she played and tallied three goals and one assist for seven points. Donaldson has played every minute of eight games as a defensive midfielder. In her career, she started 77 of the 80 games she played as a Tiger and had 23 points on nine goals and five assists.
Clark claimed second team honors on the heels of two goals and a team-high seven assists for 11 points. The junior, who was an All-Freshman Team selection in 2014, played and started 18 games in the midfield this year. Clark owns 27 career points on six goals and 15 assists and has started 56 of the 59 games she has played in a Tiger uniform.
Selaiden's second team honor marked the first All-SEC accolade of her Tiger career. A midfielder for her first three years with the program, Selaiden moved to defender in 2016 and helped anchor a Mizzou defense that allowed 1.20 goals per game, including a 0.97 goals against average in conference matches. She played and started 19 games as a senior and played every minute of 14 contests. Selaiden tallied one goal on the year and concluded her career with 16 points on eight goals. She saw action in 80 games as a Tiger and earned 43 starts, including 38 over the past two seasons.
