COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams both nabbed team titles at the Mizzou Invite as they concluded action at the three-day meet on Saturday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. The men's team tallied 1,355 points to best Drury (685), Wyoming (635.5) and UNLV (417.5), while the women posted 1,332 points to finish ahead of Illinois (637), Wyoming (619), Drury (507) and UNLV (269). Seven other programs competed only in diving.
Over the course of the meet, the Tigers combined to set 10 school records and four individual NCAA automatic qualifying cuts.
Saturday saw three school records and two 'A' cuts, including one apiece from senior Michael Chadwick (Charlotte, North Carolina). Chadwick broke his own 100 free school mark in morning prelims with a swim of 41.80, which was also an automatic qualifying time. He then placed first in finals with a 41.85, while senior Andrew Sansoucie (Wentzville, Missouri) touched third in 43.49 and sophomore Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba) was fourth in 43.65.
The Tigers also saw both the men's and women's 1650 free school records go down in Saturday finals as senior Nick Davis (Chesterfield, Missouri) and junior Kira Zubar (Chaska, Minnesota) both recorded their second school marks of the meet. Zubar clocked a 16:03.37 to win the women's race and drop 15 seconds off her old school record. She also broke Mizzou's 1000 free mark during her 1650, as she went out in 9:44.18, seven seconds faster than the previous Tiger mark set in 2007. On the men's side, Davis swam a personal best by 14 seconds and bested Mizzou's old mark by two tenths of a second with a 15:09.06.
Junior Hannah Stevens (Lexington, Ohio) notched her second NCAA 'A' time of the season as she went a personal best 1:51.73 to win the 200 back. She finished ahead of freshman Jennifer King (Glasgow, Scotland), who took second in 1:53.60, and senior Nadine Laemmler (Wackersdorf, Bavaria, Germany) in third in 1:54.62.
In the men's 200 back, senior Carter Griffin (Parker, Colorado) swam a season-best time of 1:40.67 to take top honors. Freshman Nick Alexander (Crestwood, Missouri) dropped a 1:42.92 to move into fourth on Mizzou's top list, while sophomore Alex Walton (Wilton, Iowa) was third in 1:43.67.
Junior Sharli Brady (Burlington, Kentucky) won her third individual event of the meet as she took the 200 fly win in 1:56.47. Freshman Azra Avdic (Skokie, Illinois) took second in 1:58.26, which moved her into third-place in the Mizzou record books.
Mizzou claimed first-place in both the men's and women's 200 breast races, with seniors Fabian Schwingenschlogl (Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany) and Katharine Ross (Des Moines, Iowa) coming away with wins. On the men's side, Schwingenschlogl touched the wall in 1:53.34, ahead of fellow senior Eddie Mapel (Hinsdale, Illinois), who clocked a 1:55.62. Ross swam a 2:10.47 to win the women's race.
The Tigers concluded the meet with a sweep of the 400 free relays. The men's relay of Schreuders, Sansoucie, sophomore Sam Coffman (Centennial, Colorado) and Chadwick notched an automatic qualifying time of 2:52.17, which ranks second all-time at Mizzou. On the women's side, Hayden, Stevens, freshman Haley Hynes (Lee's Summit, Missouri) and Metzger-Seymour touched first in 3:17.32.
The diving teams are idle until the Tennessee Diving Invite, Jan. 1-3, in Knoxville, Tennessee, while the swimming teams return to the pool on Friday, Jan. 6 in a dual against Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.
