Mizzou will race at the NCAA Championships as a team for the first time since 2004
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Coming off its first regional title in 12 years, Mizzou Women's Cross Country was ranked No. 13 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches' Poll, announced by the organization on Monday. After not being ranked in any poll this season (received votes in the Sept. 13, Oct. 18 poll and Nov. 1), the Tigers vaulted 17 spots in the top-30 rankings.
The ranking is the first for the women's cross country team since Nov. 1, 2005, when Mizzou was ranked No. 28.
The Tigers have enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in more than a decade this season, as they won the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship on Friday, Nov. 11, its first regional title since 2004. Four runners earned a spot on the All-Midwest Regional team by finishing in the top-25, led by junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa), who won the race with a time of 19:54.4, a personal-record.
At the SEC Championships on Oct. 28, Mizzou earned its highest finish at a conference meet since 2004 by placing third. Schweizer paced the Tigers once again, taking home Mizzou's first conference championship since 1997 with a first-place finish. The SEC Women's Runner of the Year, Schweizer has won four of five meets she's raced this season and was named SEC Runner of the Week three times, a program-record for a single season.
Mizzou will race in the NCAA Championships as a team for the first time since on Nov. 19, in Terre Haute, Ind. Earlier this season, Mizzou raced at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Pre-National Invitational, where the Tigers finished 12th.
