LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas scored 40 seconds into the second overtime session to earn a 1-0 win over the Mizzou soccer team Sunday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Lawrence, Kan. The game was close throughout but the Jayhawks struck on a close-range shot to end the Tigers' season.
Mizzou finished 11-7-2 on the season, while Kansas improved to 11-5-4.
After 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Jayhawks used a five-yard strike from Lois Heuchan only 40 seconds into the double overtime to give the home team the win. The ball was crossed across the goal to Heuchan, who calmly beat Mizzou sophomore keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) to the right netting.
The contest was evenly matched, with Kansas owning a 17-14 edge in shots and both teams committing eight fouls. The Tigers did have a 12-6 advantage in corner kicks, including a 10-3 lead in the second half and overtime.
Freshman forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) nearly put Mizzou up in the third minute when she received the ball at midfield and raced toward goal. However, the freshman's final touch was a bit heavy and the Kansas keeper came off her line to block Luebbert's 12-yard shot.
In the 18th minute, Luebbert sent a cross from the endline to junior midfielder Allie Hess (Kearney, Mo.). Hess one-timed the shot toward net but her attempt hit off the crossbar and was corralled by the goalie.
Seconds into the second half, Hess found junior midfielder Savannah Trujillo (Kansas City, Mo.) wide open in the box. Trujillo took a touch and sent a shot on net but the Kansas keeper made a diving glove save to keep Mizzou off the board.
The Tigers' best chance of the day came from the foot of senior defender Erin Webb (Castle Rock, Colo.) in the 81st minute. She dribbled into the box and unleashed a left-footed strike that sailed inches over the crossbar.
