Goals from Luebbert and Johnson Give @MizzouSoccer 2-0 Win Over Alabama

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou soccer team used goals from freshman Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) and junior Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) to notch a 2-0 win over Alabama Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium. With the win, the Tigers improved to 9-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Southeastern Conference action, while the Crimson Tide fell to 7-6-1 and 2-4-1.

The Missouri defense and sophomore keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) recorded its third shutout of the season, all of which have come in SEC play.

Mizzou peppered the Alabama defense with pressure and shots from the opening whistle but could not break through until the 28th minute when Luebbert and Johnson combined to put the Tigers on the board.

With the ball on the endline, Johnson cut back and sent a cross to Luebbert, who was stationed six-yards in front of the net. The freshman one-timed a shot over the Crimson Tide keeper's head for her team-leading seventh goal of the season and a 1-0 Mizzou advantage. Luebbert now ranks seventh on Mizzou's all-time freshman list in both goals (seven) and points (17).

Johnson tallied a goal of her own, her second of the season, in the 85th minute to put the game away for the Tigers. She received the ball from sophomore Bethany Coons, who danced around a defender and found Johnson wide open in front of the net. Johnson sent a right-footed strike to the left of the Alabama goalie and a 2-0 Tiger lead. With her point and assist on the day, Johnson now is tied for the team-lead with five assists and ranks third on the squad with nine points.

Overall in the match, Mizzou owned an 18-10 edge in shots and a 9-5 advantage in corners.

Dossey notched four saves in goal in the win.

The Tigers return to the field on Friday, Oct. 14 when they host the Vanderbilt Commodores on Senior Night at 6:30 p.m. CT at Walton Stadium.
