Late Strike Earns @MizzouSoccer 1-1 Draw at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Junior midfielder Allie Hess (Kearney, Mo.) scored an equalizer in the 86th minute to earn the Mizzou soccer team a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Texas A&M Thursday night at Ellis Field in College Station, Texas. The Aggies led most of the match but Hess knotted the game at 1-1 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to earn the Tigers a draw.

Mizzou went to 8-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Southeastern Conference play with the tie, while Texas A&M went to 7-5-1 and 2-3-1 on the year.

The Tigers were forced to play the final 29:13 of the match with 10 players after sophomore Rachel Hise received her second yellow card of the game.

A Mizzou goal in the waning minutes of regulation seemed inevitable and Hess finally delivered. She one-timed a pass from junior Kaitlyn Clark (Liberty, Mo.) that beat the Aggie keeper to her left for a 1-1 game. The tally was the sixth of the season for Hess, which ties her with freshman Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) for the team led. Clark notched her team-leading fifth assist of the year on the play.

The Tigers took control of the game after Texas A&M's Grace Piper slotted a 30-yard strike into the left netting for a 1-0 Aggie lead in the second minute of action.

Mizzou had a 23-18 advantage in shots in the match, including an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Additionally, the Tigers had 16 corners to the Aggies' six. The Missouri offense twice had shots hit off the crossbar, forced Texas A&M's keeper into nine saves and the Aggie defense to clear a ball near the line.

Overtime saw back-and-forth play but both teams failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. In the 94th minute, junior Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) received a ball from Luebbert, but the junior's 15-yard shot sailed over the crossbar.

Sophomore keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) made five saves in net for the Tigers, including a pair of diving stops in the second half and overtime.

Mizzou returns to field on Sunday, Oct. 9 when the team hosts Alabama at 1 p.m. CT in the Pink Out match. The first 250 fans will receive pink Mizzou Soccer thunderstix.
