COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women's Golf has added Cherise Otter (Bloomington, Ind.) to its 2016-17 roster, as announced Monday (July 11) by head coach Stephanie Priesmeyer. Otter is the No. 1-ranked golfer in the state of Indiana coming out of high school, according to National Junior Golf Scoreboard and is expected to make an immediate impact on Mizzou's team.
"Cherise will join our team this fall and it was a great opportunity for us and her to make this happen so quickly," Priesmeyer said. "Cherise is a very accomplished athlete in golf and in basketball. She is an excellent student and was also named the Mental Attitude Award winner her senior year in the state of Indiana. That award is a very prestigious award that always goes to an athlete with high character, sportsmanship, high academic marks, and they must excel in their sport. We are looking forward to Cherise contributing to our team this year and we look to build on the success we had last year."
Otter brings with her an impressive track record that features a 2014 Indiana State Championship and a 2015 State Runner-Up finish. Her 2014 state title was by an impressive seven strokes, the largest margin of victory by a prep golfer at the ISHAA State Championships since 1999. Otter also set the all-time record low round at the Indiana Conference Championship, firing a 66, six strokes lower than the previous record.
Otter was also a four-time member of the Indiana Girls All-State Golf Team and earned the 2015 Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Athlete Award. Otter was one of three Indiana players selected to play in the USGA Women's State Team Championship in 2015, as well, and took home the IHSAA's top girls golf award with the Girls Golf Mental Attitude Award.
An exceptional athlete, Otter was also a standout with the Bloomington South girl's basketball team and was heavily involved in extracurricular activities. She was the senior executive chair for the Riley Dance Marathon, raising the second-most money among any group at Bloomington South. Otter also dedicated her time to her high school's student council, the Panther activity council and the student leadership council. In addition, she compiled a 3.80 grade-point-average in her four years at Bloomington South.
