COLUMBIA, Mo. - BYU became the second team to be eliminated from the 2016 NCAA Columbia Regional, as they fell 2-0 to Nebraska. The Cornhuskers stayed alive with their victory Friday evening and will now face Mizzou on Saturday, May 21. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (CT).
The Cornhuskers struck right off the bat with two runs in the first inning. Senior Mattie Fowler (Tucson, Ariz.) ripped an RBI single for the first run and junior Cassie McClure (Kingwood, Texas) added a sacrifice fly later in the frame.
BYU's first legitimate scoring threat came in the second, as it posted runners at second and third with one out. Nebraska's McClure worked out of the jam, inducing an infield pop-up and strikeout to end the inning.
After Nebraska's two runs in the top of the first, both pitching staffs locked in and tallied zero after zero in the run column. Freshman Olivia Sanchez (Murrieta, Calif.) was sensational in relief for the Cougars, tossing 6.2 shutout innings with three strikeouts.
McClure was even better for the visiting Cornhuskers, throwing a complete game shutout while allowing only three hits and striking out six batters. Nebraska's right-handed hurler earned the victory Friday and improved her 2016 season record to 17-10.
Senior Kiki Stokes (Olathe, Kan.) scored the game's first run in the opening inning, marking her 200th career run scored and setting the Nebraska Softball school record.
