Goodwin, McKernan Earn First-Career NCAA Championships Bids

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Sophomore Madeline McKernan (Montgomery, Texas) and freshman Kyle Goodwin (Aurora, Colo.) of the Mizzou men's and women's diving teams earned berths to the 2016 NCAA Championships after top six finishes on platform at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships Wednesday (March 9) in College Station, Texas. McKernan and Goodwin, who earned their first NCAA bids of their careers, are only eligible to dive platform at the Championships.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Sophomore Madeline McKernan (Montgomery, Texas) and freshman Kyle Goodwin (Aurora, Colo.) of the Mizzou men's and women's diving teams earned berths to the 2016 NCAA Championships after top six finishes on platform at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships Wednesday (March 9) in College Station, Texas. McKernan and Goodwin, who earned their first NCAA bids of their careers, are only eligible to dive platform at the Championships.

The NCAA Women's Division I Swimming and Diving Championships take place March 16-20, while the men's Championships are scheduled for March 23-26, both in Atlanta, Ga.

Additionally, senior Clark Thomas (Olathe, Kan.) qualified to compete platform at the NCAA Championships Wednesday, in addition to his earlier bids on both 1-meter and 3-meter.

McKernan notched a platform prelims score of 279.00, then posted a career-best 283.75 in finals for a total event score off 562.75 to place fifth overall. The top nine finishers earned NCAA bids in the event.

On men's platform, the top eight finishers earned NCAA Championships bids. Goodwin sat seventh after prelims a then-career-high 346.95, then upped that tally with a 350.20 in finals for a day total of 697.45 to take sixth. The freshman narrowly missed a Championships bid on 3-meter earlier in the meet by two spots.

Thomas placed 10th in the men's platform competition with a score of 668.60, on scores of 326.70 in prelims and season-high 341.90 in finals. The senior only needed to place among the top 12 on platform due to his 3-meter berth on Monday. Thomas also took eighth on 1-meter Tuesday and will compete on all three events at the NCAA Championships.
