Tigers tie, then break 18-hole tournament record during first two rounds Monday
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Playing on its home course at The Club at Old Hawthorne, Mizzou Women's Golf recorded the two lowest rounds in Johnie Imes Invitational history on Monday. The Tigers shot a 280 (-8) in the first round and then followed that by shattering the tournament record with a 269 (-19) in the second round, breaking a record previously set by Mizzou and Kansas State a year ago. At 27-under par heading into the final round, Mizzou leads the tournament by 19 shots.
"We couldn't be more proud of our team effort today," head coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "I never looked at the online scoring, so I wasn't sure how everyone was doing as a whole until the end. It was pretty awesome to see the results. We had a lot of birdies and some eagles. Our players had patience and they had a great look about them today. I could see from our body language that they were in a good frame of mind. We are not worrying about the outcome today as we will continue to focus on the moment and stay in the present. We have 18 holes tomorrow, and we will stay in the moment."
Junior Jessica Meek (Carnoustie, Scotland) led the way on Monday by posting consecutive career-best rounds of 67 (-5). She leads the tournament individually by three strokes and tied the tournament record for the lowest opening round score. Senior Michelle Butler (Dunedin, Fla.) shot a career-best 65 (-7) that included two eagles on the front nine during the second round. She is tied for third individually with sophomore Clara Young (North Berwick, Scotland), who is also 6-under par after carding a 66 in the middle round. Senior Haelena Schwemmer (O'Fallon, Mo.) added a career-best 71 (-1) in the second round and is 1-over par overall. Freshman Emma Allen (Southampton, England) shot a 4-under 68 in the first round. Competing individually, freshman Cayce Hendrickson (Benton, Ky.) shot 3-over during the first 36 holes.
Middle Tennessee is in second place after shooting 8-under par, led by Samantha Gotcher at 3-under par and Maddie Denton's 66 (-6) in the opening round. Iowa is in the third spot at 5-under, with Amy Ihm at 6-under and Elisa Suarez at 3-under.
The final round begins with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start on Tuesday. Live results are available at https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/15124/.
