Genovese and Sanchez deliver a pair of homers to spark Mizzou's offense
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Softball improved to 34-10 on the year with a 7-2 win over No. 3 LSU in game one of the series at University Field on Saturday, April 25. Mizzou has now won 10 of their last 11 games, including nine straight. With the win, Mizzou now boasts wins over five different ranked teams this season -- including two against Southeastern Conference foes that had been ranked in the top-10.
Freshman pitcher Paige Lowary (Dallas Center, Iowa), who entered the game with a 0.51 ERA over her last seven outings, kept her hot streak rolling against the Bayou Bengals. Despite allowing a runner to score in just the third at bat of the game, Lowary buckled down as she scattered just two hits over the remainder of the game. Lowary punched out at least nine batters in a game for the first time since March 13 against Lipscomb.
Two-out hitting helped ignite Mizzou's first offensive outburst of the game. With two down in the bottom of the third inning, senior first baseman Kelsea Roth (Yorba Linda, Calif.) rocketed a line drive up the middle of the diamond for a base hit. On the first two pitches of the ensuing at bat, Roth took second base on a wild pitch, and senior shortstop Corrin Genovese (East Amherst, N.Y.) launched a two-run homerun deep over the right centerfield wall. Genovese's blast knotted the game up at 2-2.
Freshman third baseman Amanda Sanchez (West Covina, Calif.) got in on the action in the very next inning, when she sent a two-run homerun of her own over the left centerfield wall. Sanchez's homerun marked the team's 60th blast of the year, putting them in a tie for sixth place in Mizzou history for most team homers in a single season. Playing with a lead for the first time in the game, Mizzou got crooked on LSU in the next inning. The Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to four walks and a wild pitch from LSU.
Fresh off her NFCA National Player of the Week award, junior infielder Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) continued her historically torrid offensive streak on Saturday. With a single in the top of the first inning, Fagan extended her reached-base streak to 31 games. Her streak of 31 games is not only the longest of any Tiger this season, but is also third longest in Mizzou history. Should Fagan reach base in Sunday's matchup against LSU, she will tie Jen Bruck for the second longest reached-base streak in school history.
Mizzou is back in action tomorrow on Sunday, April 26. Mizzou and LSU will meet again with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+. For allthe latest on Mizzou Softball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on twitter @MizzouSoftball.
