IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Mizzou men's swimming and diving team opened the 2015 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships with three top-10 finishes and four school records during day one competition at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium Thursday in Iowa City, Iowa. Missouri's day was highlighted by a sixth-place showing in the 200 free relay, the best relay finish in program history.
After one day of action, Mizzou sits 12th with 49 points, less than six points out of 10th.
The Tigers made history early with their sixth-place finish in the 200 free relay to open the meet. The quartet of redshirt senior Matthew Margritier, sophomore Michael Chadwick, sophomore Christian Aragona and senior Sam Tierney went 1:17.18 in finals after breaking the school record with a 1:16.90 in the morning session. Mizzou's previous best relay finish was ninth in last year's 200 medley relay. This also marked the first time the Tigers ever earned points in the 200 free relay.
Chadwick earned the first individual All-America honorable mention honor of his career after winning the 50 free consolation final Thursday night. The sophomore dropped a school record 19.27 in finals to place ninth overall, breaking the school mark he set in prelims with a 19.31. Chadwick, who now owns Mizzou's 50, 100 and 200 free records, entered the meet seeded 45th in the event.
Mizzou rounded out its top-10 finishes in the 400 medley relay, when sophomore Carter Griffin, Tierney, sophomore Andrew Sansoucie and Chadwick placed second in the consolation final, and 10th overall, in a program record 3:05.58. Griffin posted a career best in the 100 back leadoff leg with a 46.64.
Missouri's fourth school record of the day was set by senior Mack Darragh in the 200 IM. The senior clocked a time of 1:44.60 in prelims to break Tierney's old school mark of 1:44.72 and finish 24th overall. Also swimming in the event were senior Igor Kozlovskij (1:45.11) and junior Daniel Graviss (1:46.76), who placed 32nd and 48th, respectively.
In the diving well, junior Clark Thomas placed 21st overall after notching a score of 334.05 in preliminaries.
