Tiger middle blocker has shined in SEC play this season
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman middle blocker Alyssa Munlyn (Suwanee, Ga.) was named Southeastern Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Week, as announced Monday by the SEC office. Munlyn recorded 20 kills on .515 hitting with 14 total blocks against Alabama and Auburn this past week. Monday's award marks Munlyn's first career honor from the SEC office.
Munlyn kicked off last week with an outstanding match vs. Alabama on Wednesday, Oct. 28, recording a rare double-double with double-digit kills and blocks. Her 12 kills and 10 total blocks against the Crimson Tide marked the first kill-block double-double by a Tiger since 2014.
Munlyn's team-leading 10 total blocks set a new career-high and led the Tigers to 23.0 total blocks vs. Alabama. The team's outstanding defensive match marked Mizzou's fourth-highest single-match block total in program history.
The Tiger middle blocker closed her weekend with another strong match on Sunday, Nov. 1, posting eight kills on .500 hitting with four total blocks vs. Auburn.
Overall this season, Munlyn has been one of the SEC's top freshman, joining Tennessee's Erica Treiber as the only first-year players to place in both the top-10 in season hitting percentage (.354) and blocks per set (1.09).
Since Mizzou began its SEC schedule on Sept. 30, Munlyn has taken her game to another level, recording 86 kills on .429 hitting with 47 total blocks in 10 total conference contests. In SEC only matches, Munlyn's .429 hitting percentage ranks third in the conference while her 1.12 blocks per set ranks sixth overall.
Mizzou (20-3, 8-2 SEC) continues its SEC schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 4, with a road trip to Texas A&M. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CT) and the match will broadcast live on ESPNU.
