MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Former Mizzou swimmer Sam Tierney won the men's 100 breast and set a new pool record at the 2015 Arena Pro Swim Series Minneapolis meet Thursday evening at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
Tierney, the fifth seed after preliminaries, clocked a time of 1:00.82 to outtouch Cody Miller by 0.04 seconds and claim win in the 100 breast men's final. In victory, Tierney broke the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center men's 100 breast LCM record of 1:01.02, set in morning prelims by Carlo Claverie. Before Thursday, the pool record stood for over four years when three-time Olympian Brendan Hansen swam a 1:01.13 in 2011.
Before the meet, Tierney's best time in the event was 1:01.17, set at the 2015 Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships in August.
The most decorated male swimmer in Mizzou history, Tierney earned 13 All-America honors, including six first team and seven honorable mention before he concluded his Tiger career in 2015. He was a three-time first team All-American in the 100 breast and a two-time first time All-American in the 200 breast. Additionally, he is tied for the highest finish (fourth in the 100 breast in 2015) by a male swimmer at the NCAA Championships.
Tierney is one of four former Tigers competing at the three-day meet. Joining him at the meet are Dominique Bouchard, Danielle Barbiea and Mack Darragh.
