Senior Kelli Hine competed at the prestigious ITA/Riviera All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California on Tuesday afternoon and fell in a pair of tight matches to top 125 opponents. Hine, Mizzou's lone competitor at the event, earned a spot in the qualfying draw through her No. 89 ITA preseason singles ranking.
The New Braunfels, Texas, native faced No. 37 Kennedy Shaffer in the opening round and dropped a close match. After falling in the first set 1-6, Hine battled back and forced an epic second-set tiebreaker that included 28 points. Eventually, Shaffer prevailed in the tiebreak 15-13 and took the match in straight sets.
Following the loss, Hine moved to the consolation bracket of the qualifying draw, where she took on No. 119 Yuliya Shupenia of DePaul. Shupenia jumped out to an early advantage and it proved to be too much as Hine fell 0-6, 3-6. Hine now rejoins the team as the Tigers prepare for the ITA Central Regional in Stillwater, Oklahoma. That event takes place from Oct. 16-19.
