COLLEGE STATION, Tx. – The Tigers kicked off the championship portion of the season on Friday (October 30) with a podium finish by sophomore Karissa Schweizer, who earned her first All-SEC honor on the cross country course. The returning SEC Freshman of the Year placed 14th overall in the conference field, leading the women's team to an eighth-place finish.
The men were the first up on the rainy Friday morning in College Station, taking sixth overall in the team competition. Leading the way for the squad was sophomore Sheldon Keence, who moved up steadily through the field throughout the 8k course to close in 22nd overall (24:16.20). Crossing just behind him was classmate Marc Dubrick, pacing through in 24:17.50 for 24th overall.
Rounding out the top five scorers for the Tiger men was a trio of juniors - Jordan Cook (31st), Will Crocker (33rd), and Dan Roe (36th).
The women's 6k was up next, with Schweizer back at the helm for the Tigers, settling in just off the shoulders of the leaders from the gun and maintaining her position in the top-20 throughout the race. A big move in the last 50 meters of the course moved her into the fourteenth position, clinching her an All-SEC Second Team honor.
Next across the line for the black and gold was the pair of juniors, Nicole Mello and Teylar Adelsberger, who moved well through the field to cross in 47th and 49th, respectively. Freshmen Kelli Jackson and Emmie Hahn rounded out the five scorers for the Tigers in 67th and 78th, respectively.
HEAR FROM COACH BURNS...
"Both of our teams battled hard today. The highlight of the day for us was Karissa Schweizer's All-SEC performance. She had to kick down three girls in the final straight and was able to finish it! Nicole Mello, Teylar Adelsberger, and Emmie Hahn really had strong races. We return nine out of ten from today's race next year, and will get Kaitlyn Fischer, Kate Smith, and Jordyn Kleve in the mix, which is very exciting. On the men's side, I think we missed an opportunity to finish a bit higher, but the guys really competed hard. Sheldon Keence and Will Crocker ran huge races for us. We're heading back to Columbia tonight, and get back to work on Sunday morning. We're not satisfied with being sixth and eighth at the conference meet, and I know both of these teams will work hard to make an impact up in the front of this race in the next couple of years. We will learn from the experiences this weekend, both good and bad, and use them to help us grow and be ready to race hard in two weeks at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet!"
