LEXINGTON, Ky. - The No. 5 weight throw performance in the country and four personal record (PR) performances highlighted day one of the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet for the Tigers, as the team closed out the first round of competition in Lexington, Ky., on Friday (January 23). With 16 of the top 25-ranked teams in the country going head-to-head over the two-day meet, the Rod McCravy Memorial has been hailed as the most competitive meet across the board during the indoor regular season.
Walking away with one of the highlights for the day was senior Kearsten Peoples, who had her best season-opening mark ever in the weight throw on Friday night. Peoples hit 21.03m (69-0) to place second in the field, and now ranks in at No. 5 in the NCAA, No. 2 in the SEC. She will be joined by fellow-senior Jill Rushin on Saturday in the shot put, an event in which both were ranked No. 1 in the NCAA last year.
The men's weight throw also saw an exciting competition, with senior Brian Duncan tossing a new PR of 19.46m (63-10.25) to place sixth overall.
Starting the day, however, was the season's first multi-event competition for senior Morgan Whitson and junior Ser Whitaker. Whitaker earned two PR marks during the first half of his seven-event competition, clocking in at 7.14 in the 60-meter dash and marking a 13.16m (43-2.25) toss in the shot put. He will enter day two, and the final three events, in fourth-place overall.
Both the men's high jump and women's pole vault saw good attempts at new PR marks, with seniors Mitch Hatten and Maggie Givens both getting knocked out of the competition at lifetime best heights. Givens was up first in the women's pole vault, joined by fellow-senior Katrine Haarklau and sophomore Alyssa Applebee. She led the trio with her 11th place finish, coming in at a final height of 3.88m (12-8.75), only one bar shy of a new lifetime best mark of 4.03m (13-2).
Hatten also got some good looks at his next PR mark, ending with a final bar of 2.04m (6-8.25), only two-inches short of his 2.09m (6-10.25) best.
Events will continue on Saturday with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon at 10 a.m. ET, followed by the start of field events at 11 a.m. and the start of running events at noon. Coverage of the final day of competition will be broadcast live on the SEC Network starting at noon.
