Sophomore LaQuisha Jackson
IOWA CITY, Ia. - Sophomore LaQuisha Jackson opened up her Mizzou career in style on Saturday (January 10), smashing through the 60-meter dash School Record with a winning performance of 7.44. Seven Tigers joined her with event wins as the team closed their season opener at the inaugural Border Battle against Iowa and Illinois.
"This was a good start to the year. We competed in a lot of off events today and saw some outstanding people step up, and it was good to see some fresh faces out there mixing it up," Head Coach Brett Halter said. "Obviously, it was exciting to see LaQuisha Jackson on the track. It's been a long time since she's raced, so that was a really impressive 60m dash. Markesh Woodson and Kwadarrius Smith had some big time races to start the year, and Karissa Schweizer raced one of the best 1000m runs that I've ever seen for the women at the University of Missouri."
TIGERS ON THE TRACK
The Tigers saw four event wins out of the running events, including the record performance from Jackson, who took to the blocks for the first time since her arrival in Columbia a year ago.
"I was nervous before I got here, but I just kept thinking 'if it's the Lord's will, then so be it'. I always give my best, no matter what. In the 60m dash, my start wasn't what I expected it to be, but I know that if I get that first 30-meters together I'll be able to run a lot faster," Jackson said before reciting her favorite quote (2 Timothy 1:7): "'God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.'"
Jackson broke the two-year-old Missouri School Record in the 60-meter dash, previously held by teammate Chelsie Stevens (7.56), with her winning time of 7.44. Three fellow transfers joined her in uniform for the first time on Saturday, as juniors Alyssa Felton and Sandrae Farquharson both represented the Tigers for the first time after their arrival in Columbia this fall.
The sprints saw a pair of exciting performances from the men's side, as well, with junior Markesh Woodson starting his season in good form with a 6.72 win in the 60-meter dash. Woodson is the Missouri School Record holder in the event with his top time of 6.60. He also holds the top time in school history for the 200-meter dash (21.13), clocked last year at the Tyson Invitational.
Joining him in the record books for the 60-meter dash is freshman Kwadarrius Smith, who opened his Tiger career with the eighth-fastest time in school history. He placed fourth in Saturday's competition with a final time of 6.86.
Smith was one of 15 freshmen to don the black and gold for the first time on Saturday. Included in this list was Karissa Schweizer, who took to the line for the first time since her performance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November. She just missed out on a spot on the All-Time Top Ten list in the 1000-meter run, winning the event in 2:53.19, only two seconds off of the No. 10 spot on the list.
Sophomore Jerrad Mason also had a winning performance for his indoor debut, crossing with the fastest time in the 600-meter run (1:20.69). He was followed by fellow-sophomore Cain Winebrenner, who crossed with a new PR in the event for third (1:21.82).
TIGERS IN THE FIELD
Several Tigers kicked off their indoor season with personal record performances in the field events, including a pair of first-place finishes from sophomore Lynnsey Brim in the long jump and senior Camille Hackamack in the weight throw. Hackamack kicked off events for the Tigers on Saturday afternoon, clinching the weight throw win with a top toss of 15.66m (51-4.50). Sophomore Ahren Bohanan was next in the ring, placing third in the weight throw with a career best toss of 17.56m (57-7.50).
Brim, and fellow-sophomore Thomas Taylor, both laid down new PR marks on the runway, with Brim taking the long jump competition win with her top mark of 5.67m (18-7.25). Taylor placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 14.44m (47-4.50).
Rounding out the field event PR's were the Tigers' high jump men, with senior Mitchell Hatten tying his all-time best finish of 2.08m (6-9.75) for second. The junior multi-event specialist, Ser Whitaker, placed fifth in the competition with a new top bar of 1.93m (6-4).
Senior Morgan Whitson had good efforts toward a PR performance in the high jump before ending at 1.73m (5-8). Senior Brian Duncan also closed just off of his PR in the weight throw (19.37m / 63-6.75), finishing second with a top toss of 19.30m (63-4).
"We saw some great team chemistry, which is exactly what we wanted to get out of this weekend. Just a lot of exciting performances across the board," Halter said. "The objective is to get to February, and I think this team understands the process it takes to get through January."
The Tigers will be at home next weekend, hosting the Missouri Invitational on Friday, January 16. For the latest on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
