COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior Markesh Woodson has temporarily traded in the black and gold for the red, white, and blue, as he represents the U.S. at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea. Woodson is one of 45 athletes from across the country to take on the track & field portion of the Games, which is set up in the Olympic style with university students (ages 17 to 28) from 170 countries competing in 21 sports throughout the 11-day event.
The Games began with an opening ceremony on July 3, with the track & field portion in competition from July 8 to July 12.
Woodson, who is slated to compete in the 100m dash and 4x100m relay, had a good start to the competition, placing second in the sixth heat of Round 1 in the 100m dash (10.35) to qualify on to Round 2. He breezed through Round 2, winning his heat with a time of 10.38 to advance to the semifinal, set to go off at 5 p.m. local time on July 9.
"He's done the right things during the first two rounds to have a great final," Assistant Coach Carjay Lyles, in charge of the sprints and jumps, said. "We're looking forward to having him bring home some hardware for the U.S., as well as Mizzou."
Woodson will be joined in the semifinal round by fellow-U.S. athlete, Ronald Baker (TCU). Both will take to the track in the 4x100m relay on Saturday, July 11.
Also competing in Gwangju this week is Katrine Haarklau, who closed her Tiger career a few weeks ago at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the pole vault. Now representing her native Norway, Haarklau advanced out of the qualification round in the pole vault and is one of 13 athletes in Thursday's final.
