| Summer Spotlight: Tyler Koonce | |
What is your title? "Assistant Director of Strategic Communications." How long have you been with Mizzou? "Nearly a month." What is your background? "I grew up in Lee's Summit, Mo., a suburb of Kansas City. Sports were always a big part of my life. I knew when I was really young that I wanted a career in athletics. For college, I attended Southeast Missouri State University, where I studied Public Relations and Sport Management. As a student, I was fortunate to work in the Sports Information department and also completed two summer PR internships with the Kansas City Chiefs. Following graduation, I worked the 2010 NFL season as a PR intern for the Baltimore Ravens and then the 2011 MLB season as a media relations intern for the Kansas City Royals before being hired full-time by the Chiefs. I spent two seasons with the Chiefs before accepting a corporate communications position with Seaboard Foods in the Kansas City area. Prior to the 2014-15 school year, I returned to my alma mater as the Assistant Sports Information Director, and in May, I joined Mizzou's Strategic Communications department." What is your favorite memory while working in athletics? "Following the 2010 NFL season on the Ravens PR staff, we were recipients of the Pete Rozelle Award from the Pro Football Writers of America, which recognizes the top PR department in the NFL for a given season. This was a departmental goal prior to that season and it was rewarding to know that our efforts were recognized and respected by media members from across the country that covered our team." What are your women's basketball responsibilities? "I am essentially a publicist for Mizzou's Women's Basketball program. I help maintain the website and social media pages, write press releases, design publications and facilitate dealings with the local and national media as it pertains to the team. I write many of the stories on MUTigers.com and post frequently to our social media channels." What are you most looking forward to this season? "I'm excited to promote and tell the story of our team to our supporters. I look forward to developing relationships with everyone involved with the program and athletic department. It is exciting to join a program with high expectations." Favorite sports teams: "Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs." Favorite professional athletes: "George Brett, Derrick Thomas and Michael Jordan." Favorite basketball movie: "Michael Jordan to the Max." Something few people know about you: "I have two older brothers, Ryan (36) and Shawn (34). Ryan works at the Library of Congress in Culpeper, Va., while Shawn works for Black & Veatch, a global construction company headquartered in Kansas City. Shawn previously worked in supply and cost management for seven years on military bases in Afghanistan and Iraq, supporting the United States Armed Forces during the War on Terrorism." Website you're always on: "CBS Sports." Place you would most like to visit and why: "Bora Bora and New Guinea. My grandfather was on a crew that built Army runways in both places during World War II and said he had never experienced paradise until going to those locations." What do you do in your spare time? "I'm a huge sports fan. I go to a lot of Chiefs and Royals games at Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadium. I also enjoy traveling and have been to 19 NFL stadiums and 14 MLB parks with plans to see a game at all of them. The Lake of the Ozarks is a place close to home that I enjoy visiting." Do you have any pets? "I do not currently have any pets, but growing up we had four different dogs - all Airedale Terriers - over the years." If you could meet anyone, who would it be? "I wish I had the opportunity to meet John Wooden before he passed away. I feel that his coaching success is unmatched in the industry with 10 NCAA national championships in a 12-year span. I'm also fascinated by his Pyramid of Success with inspirational messages for others, which I often read." |
