Columbia, Mo. - For the second time, senior Courtney Wood has been recognized by the Southeastern Conference (SEC) for her actions off the track, as she was named one of the members of the 2015 SEC Community Service Team last week. Wood, whose final season in the black and gold will continue this week at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Round, has lent her time and energy to numerous projects on both the local and international stage.
During her time as a Tiger, Wood has dedicated over 200 hours to organizations in the Columbia area like Services for Independent Living, Boys and Girls Club, Mizzou Moves, Mid-Missouri Food Bank, Special Olympics, Caleb's Pitch, among others. Named team captain for both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, Wood was also a leader in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), going on to represent Mizzou on the converence level.
Her reach has also extended far beyond Missouri, as she became one of the first Mizzou student-athletes to participate in the Coach for College program during the summer of 2014. Wood, along with fellow-Tigers Maggie Givens (track & field), Tre Chambers (track & field), and Lydia Ely (volleyball) dedicated a month of their summer to living and working in Vietnam, teaching children the value of sport and various life skills.
Wood will be one of the 24 track & field athletes to continue into the post-season this week, qualifying for the NCAA Championships West Preliminary Round in the 3000m steeplechase. The meet will be held in Austin, Tx., at Mike A. Myers Stadium from May 28 through May 30. For the latest on your Tigers, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
