COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou wrestling is fresh off arguably their greatest season in program history. The 2014-15 Tiger Style squad finished the regular season with a perfect 24-0 record and a No. 1 national ranking.
Additionally, the team racked up a National Duals Finals championship, the program's first ever regular season conference championship, their fourth consecutive conference tournament title and a fourth place team finish at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
While head coach Brian Smith loses a talent rich senior class, the Tigers are set to bring in a whopping 19 new grapplers to Columbia, Mo. this upcoming season. Mizzou Athletics will catch up with each of the incoming freshman throughout the summer, and get an inside look at their high school journey and what they're looking forward to most at Mizzou.
Up first is Will Roark from Seneca High School in Seneca, Mo. Roark ended his high school wrestling career with three consecutive Class 1 Missouri State Championships. Furthermore, he closed out his career with 155 consecutive victories and his 214 all-time wins marked a new Missouri State wrestling record.
After claiming a second place finish at state during his freshman year, Roark battled back and reeled off three consecutive titles. Beginning with his first title in 2013 and his most recent championship this past February, Roark had mixed emotions after each triumph.
"It was different each time out," Roark recalled. "The first one was redemption since I lost my freshman season. The second time it was cool to repeat, and this past year was awesome since it was my last time competing with Seneca High School. It was definitely a bittersweet moment knowing it was my last time with them."
Roark undoubtedly made his name throughout the state of Missouri over the course of his four years at Seneca High School. The talented grappler also picked up some major national recognition throughout his high school career after success at some big time events.
In 2014, Roark earned 3rd place honors at USAW Folkstyle Nationals (132 pounds) and a 4th place finish at USAW Junior Freestyle Championships (138 pounds). Additionally, this past April he tallied a 2nd place finish at FloNationals (138 pounds).
"Those events were awesome," Roark said. "You get a lot better competition at tournaments like those, and you get to go against some of the best wrestlers in the country. You can learn from those opponents even in losses."
Mizzou has maintained its reputation as one of the best programs in collegiate wrestling over the past decade. In fact, Tiger Style has recorded four top-10 team finishes at NCAA Championships the past nine years, and this year's 4th place finish was their 6th top-10 NCAA finish in program history.
With the bar set high in Columbia, Mo., Roark looks to continue the program's excellence throughout his future stay with the team.
"I hope to come in and get better every day," Roark said. "Their resources, coaches, and teammates will make me better. It's so awesome to come in to such a great program. Coming off the year they just had, I plan to do my best and become a future All-American."
Across the country, thousands of high school seniors are nearing graduation and will begin preparing for their transition to college. Like any of these other individuals, Roark is anxious to begin his new journey at the University of Missouri.
"It will be cool," Roark said. "I'm really excited to wrestle up there. It'll be a nice change from high school to college. It'll be fun wrestling with such great teammates and making new friends. I think the whole experience will be so much fun. It'll be great to be with such a successful program like Mizzou."
