March 27, 2015
Columbia, Mo. -Mizzou Softball continues its Southeastern Conference slate this weekend as the Tigers host No. 8 Auburn. The three-game set from March 27-29 begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT. Friday's game will be streamed on SEC Network+ here and Saturday and Sunday's game will be featured live on SEC Network.
Gates open an hour prior to each game. General admission on Friday is $3. On Saturday and Sunday, tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and under. While supplies last, 250 gold glitter headbands will be given away at Friday's contest.
This weekend the Tigers welcome honorary coach and bat girl, Ryleigh Patience. Ryleigh is a 10 year old girl who suffers from Hurler's syndrome or MPS 1 (mucopolysaccridosis 1). Ryleigh lacks the enzyme to break down waste sugars in her body and those toxins build up in her system causing physical symptoms and challenges for her. She receives a synthetic enzyme infusion weekly that helps to decrease any further damage to her body. Ryleigh found a love for softball shortly after her hip and knee surgery in 2011 and has been lucky to find a league through the Independence Girls Softball Association who will let her play as long as she is physically able. She has grown up loving Mizzou, has a real love for softball and hopes to become a softball coach someday!
TIGER TALES
• Mizzou has blasted its way to success lately, pummeling 28 home runs in its last 14 games. The Tigers have tied the school record twice in that span, belting five home runs vs. both Longwood and Illinois.
• Mizzou has a +24 run differential in the fifth inning in 2015, outscoring opponents 30-6 in that frame this season. The Tigers plated six runs in the fifth to erase an 8-2 deficit and complete a wild comeback victory over Tennessee, avoiding a sweep.
• The Tigers have swiped 53 bases as a team on 57 attempts. Mizzou's first three hitters in the lineup are responsible for 43 of the squad's stolen bases. Meanwhile, the Tigers have allowed six stolen bases against them, the lowest mark in the SEC.
• Mizzou has 40 hits off of left-handed batters in 115 plate appearances. The team's .348 batting average against southpaws ranks third in the SEC, behind only Auburn and Georgia.
• Fresshman Paige Lowary clamps down and is effective when she needs to finish off an inning. Opposing batters are hitting just .187 with two outs against her. Lowary is allowing 5.79 hits per game, which is the lowest amount on the team despite throwing a team-high 5.03 innings per appearance.
• Ehren Earleywine's club might not be known as a bunch of mashers, but his Tigers have definitely found their power stroke of late. After hitting 11 home runs in its first 14 games combined, the Tigers have swatted 25 long balls in their last 12 games alone - including a school record-tying five bombs each in wins over Longwood and Illinois.
• Mizzou is 15-2 on the season when a Tiger hits a home run. Ten different players on the roster have at least one dinger this season. Four of those 10 (Sanchez, Cousins, Bange and Harvey) have all launched their first career HRs in 2015.
• Freshman Amanda Sanchez has started all 26 of Mizzou's games at third base. She has seven home runs already this season after smacking two long balls in the same game vs. Illinois.
• Recently, senior Kelsea Roth rounded into form as she went 13-for-26 in the team's last 10 games, to raise her season average all the way up to .333 heading into this week. Her production was even more critical, as she drove in 17 runs, scored 15 times, hit six home runs, and added 12 walks to the ledger in that span.
• Roth, who is 6th all-time on the Mizzou career home runs chart, with 37, boasts a current 16-game reached safely streak. She has been an on-base machine, drawing 16 walks in 2015. Roth is one of six Tigers with at least 10 free passes this season.
• In the first release of the NCAA Softball RPI, Mizzou is ranked No. 10. The Tigers were No. 16 at the end of the last season. The Southeastern Conference has the highest conference RPI in the country.
• All five of Mizzou's losses thus far have come to Top 25 RPI teams. The Tigers have taken care of business when they should, boasting a 14-0 record against teams that have an RPI of 26 or higher.
THE OPPONENT
• No. 8 Auburn has flexed its muscles offensively this season. The Tigers in blue and orange lead the SEC in slugging percentage (.675), on base percentage (.491), runs scored (326), hits (344), RBI (300), doubles (58) and home runs (69).
• Auburn has seven batters who have started at least 34 games batting .350 or higher. Junior Tiffany Howard boasts a team-high .533 average with 56 hits and 16 RBI. Fellow junior Emily Carosone has 50 RBI behind 22 extra-base hits.
• Auburn's top two hurlers, Rachael Walters and Lexi Davis, are a combined 26-1 in 45 total appearances in the circle this season. Walters has thrown four complete games and has a 1.98 ERA heading in to the weekend. Davis has team-high 68 strikeouts in 77.0 innings of work.
