Swimming and Diving Teams Falls to Auburn on Senior Day

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou's men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Auburn in a closely contested dual meet at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. The men were ousted 162-138 and the women were edged 162-137 against the Tigers in blue and orange. Fifteen seniors were recognized during a ceremony before the first event as the meet with Auburn rounded out Mizzou's dual action for the 2014-15 campaign.

Junior Abby Duncan, who transferred to Mizzou from Auburn, had a strong day in the pool. Duncan helped the women off to a quick start in the 200 medley relay. Hannah Stevens, Dani Barbiea, Rachel Hayden and Duncan clocked a 1:40.61 to win the opening event. Duncan went on to win the 200 breast with a time of 2:13.34 and finish second in the 100 breast behind teammate Katharine Ross, who claimed first in 1:00.62.

The Mizzou women also dominated the butterfly events. Freshmen Erin Metzger-Seymour and Sharli Brady cruised past the field in the 200 fly. Metzger-Seymour secured the win with a 1:59.15 and Brady followed in second with a 1:59.41. Metzger-Seymour also grabbed a second-place result in the 100 fly. She touched in behind senior Dani Barbiea, who collected a win on senior day to add to her illustrious career. Barbiea clocked a 53.75 to go out in style at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.

Mizzou's men's squad used a mix of experience and youth to keep within nine points heading into the final three events. Freshman Ryan Baker shattered a personal record en route to winning the 1000 free with a time of 9:19.29. That performance puts him at fourth all-time in school history in the event. Baker also placed third in the 500 free.

Fellow freshman Grant Kelton edged teammate Dillon Love by six one-hundredths of a second to take first in the 100 back. Kelton added a second-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 1:45.33. Sophomore Mitchell Forde polished off a solid day for Mizzou's young swimmers with a win in the 200 free in 1:37.44.

Senior Sam Tierney spent his senior day ahead of the pack. Tierney won both the 100 breast and 200 breast to wrap his final collegiate dual meet.

The Mizzou divers combined to win two events. Freshman Alexa Beckwith and junior Lauren Reedy finished first and second in the 1-meter springboard competition. Beckwith tallied 285.45 points to earn the win. Junior Clark Thomas bounced back from a third place result in the 1-meter springboard to claim the 3-meter title with a score of 421.35 points.
