COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Reagan Russell scored just 23 seconds into the match as the Mizzou soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium. The Tigers improved to 9-2-2 overall and 4-1-0 in Southeastern Conference play with the victory, while the Commodores fell to 5-7-1 and 0-4-1.
Russell's early tally was the eventual game winner, while freshman Kaitlyn Clark scored Mizzou's second in the 57th minute. Clark also earned an assist on Russell's goal and freshman Allie Hess had two assists on the day.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein earned the win and recorded her fifth shutout of the year in net.
Missouri wasted no time to take a 1-0 lead on visiting Vanderbilt. The Commodores had the opening kick but the Tigers quickly won the ball. Freshman Kaitlyn Clark sent a cross into the box from the left flank that fellow freshman Allie Hess tipped to the right of the right post. Russell ran onto the ball near the endline and struck a shot toward net. Vanderbilt's keeper seemed to have a beat on the shot but the ball trickled under her legs for a 1-0 Tiger lead just 23 seconds into the match.
A few near misses for the Tigers kept the score 1-0 at the half. Russell narrowly missed her second goal of the match in the 10th minute and sophomore Melanie Donaldson had a blast bounce off the crossbar in the 30th minute of play.
The tally was the fifth of the season for Russell. Clark and Hess each earned assists on the play.
Clark added her tally in the 57th minute thanks to a nice pass from Hess and nifty dribbling. Running down the middle of the field, Hess sent a pass up to Clark, who got her foot on the ball and dribbled into the box. Originally going to her left, Clark cut back to her right and blasted a 15-yard shot into the upper right netting for a 2-0 Missouri advantage.
Clark's goal was the second of the year for the freshman. Her three points on the day put her season total to six, all of which have come in SEC action. Additionally, Hess' assist marked her fourth point of the year, all in the last two games.
The Tigers outshot the Commodores 17-8 and had a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.
Sauerwein made a pair of diving saves to keep the Commodores off the board. She made three saves overall.
Missouri travels to Auburn, Ala., next week for a match against Auburn on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. CT.
