COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou soccer team got goals from senior Taylor Grant and sophomore Lauren Selaiden to conclude the regular season with a 2-1 home win over Arkansas Thursday night at Walton Stadium. The win put the Tigers' regular season record at 11-5-3 overall and 6-4-1 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Razorbacks fell to 8-6-1 and 4-4-3.
With the win, Missouri clinched a fourth-place finish in the SEC standings. As the four-seed, the Tigers will receive a first-round bye in next week's 2014 SEC Tournament and will face five-seed South Carolina on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in a match televised live on the SEC Network.
The Tigers struck first with a first-half tally from Grant to give the home squad a 1-0 edge in the 28th minute. Senior Kaysie Clark found Grant, who then dribbled up to the top of the box and unleashed a shot into the upper right corner of the net for Grant's team-leading seventh goal of the season. Clark's assist marked her 10th of the season, which is tied for fourth on Mizzou's single season list.
Missouri sent three more shots toward the Arkansas keeper over the final 17 minutes of the first half but could not convert on its chances.
After a narrow miss on a header from Grant early in the second half, the Razorbacks slotted home their own chance in for a 1-1 game in the 55th minute. Arkansas' Alexandra Fischer sent a well-placed shot into the corner of the net off a pass from Ashleigh Ellenwood for the equalizer.
Arkansas sent a flurry of shots toward Mizzou's net over the next five minutes but the Tiger defense held strong to keep the match even.
The Tigers' offense then found its rhythm, earning three corners in seven minutes midway through the second frame.
On the third corner in the 74th minute, freshman Savannah Trujillo lofted the ball 10-yards in front of the net. Selaiden got her foot on the pass and one-timed a shot toward the lower left corner of the goal. Somehow the ball got through traffic and trickled over the goal line before the Razorback keeper could get a hand on it for a 2-1 Tiger lead.
The eventual game-winner, the goal marked Selaiden's second tally of the year, both of which have been game-winners. Trujillo's assist was the fourth of her freshman campaign.
A last-minute push from Arkansas had the visitors with a near breakaway in the final seconds but Ellenwood's long shot with one second remaining flew high.
The Tigers outshot the Razorbacks 17-13 and had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
Missouri opens 2014 SEC Tournament play on Wednesday, Nov. 5 against South Carolina at 7:30 p.m.
