COLUMBIA, Mo. - Redshirt sophomore Jessica Herrman and freshman Allie Hess each tallied their first collegiate goals as the Mizzou soccer team recorded a 2-1 win over Kentucky Friday afternoon in Columbia, Mo. The win improved the Tigers' record to 8-2-2 overall and 3-1-0 in Southeastern Conference action, while the Wildcats fell to 8-3-0 and 2-2-0.
Herrman's goal, the eventual game-winner, was especially sweet for the Raytown, Mo., native, as Herrman missed the 2012 and 2013 seasons due to injury.
Kentucky broke the early scoreless tie with a goal in the 12th minute. Mizzou's redshirt senior keeper McKenzie Sauerwein made an initial save on a shot from Michaela Dooley but the rebound bounced out to Wildcat Jade Klump, who knocked the ball into the net for a 1-0 Kentucky lead.
The Tiger offense found its grove following the Wildcat goal and began to put pressure on the Kentucky defense. Missouri finally broke through with an equalizer in the 39th minute. After sophomore Rachel Hignett lofted a cross into the box, junior Candace Johnson ran toward goal but was blocked from the ball by the Wildcat goalie. The keeper knocked the ball out from the goal mouth to the foot of Hess, who made a move around a defender and struck an eight-yard shot into the left netting. The tally was the first collegiate goal for Hess.
In the second half, both teams traded chances but neither could capitalize until the 75th minute. With less than 15 minutes left in the match, sophomore Melanie Donaldson found Herrman making a run on the left. Herrman dribbled into the box and sent a shot to the keeper's left that bounced into the right netting for a 2-1 Tiger lead.
Just one minute later, Kentucky seemed poised to level the match at 2-2 but Cara Ledman's long attempt clanged off the crossbar.
The Tiger defense held firm the final 14 minutes to preserve to 2-1 win.
Kentucky outshot Mizzou 18-13 but shots on goal were even a 5-5.
Sauerwein notched four saves in net for the Tigers.
Missouri returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 5 against the Vanderbilt Commodores at 1 p.m.
