ATHENS, Ga. - Senior Kaysie Clark and sophomore Melanie Donaldson each tallied goals as the Mizzou soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-0 win at No. 17 Georgia Friday night in Athens, Ga. The Tigers improved to 10-3-2 overall and 5-2-0 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Bulldogs fell to 9-2-1 and 4-2-1.
Missouri's victory was the second road win over a ranked opponent this season, joining a 1-0 win against then-No. 14 South Carolina on Sept. 26. The Tigers were also the first team to shutout the Bulldogs this year.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams fail to convert good chances, the Tigers came out with a purpose in the second half. The squad dominated possession over the first 10 minutes and were finally rewarded with a goal in the 56th minute. Clark received the ball on the right flank and dribbled into the top of the box. She eluded a defender and unleashed a 16-yard left footed shot past the Georgia keeper and into the upper left netting for a 1-0 Mizzou advantage. The tally the second goal of the year for Clark, who upped her season point total to 13.
Missouri continued to put pressure on the Georgia defense, with near misses from juniors Reagan Russell and Candace Johnson. But the offensive clicked in the 82nd minute as the Tigers added their second tally of the game.
Stationed just inside the box, freshman Kaitlyn Clark passed back to Donaldson, who sent a 17-yard rocket over the goalie and up into the upper third of the net. Donaldson recorded her second goal of the year, while the assist was Kaitlyn Clark's third of the season.
The Tigers' offensive possession kept the Bulldogs from creating chances in the second half. Georgia took only four shots in the final 45 minutes, one of which came in the final minutes.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein notched Missouri's sixth shutout of the year after recording five saves in goal.
Mizzou outshot Georgia 18-11, and had seven corners to the Bulldogs' two.
Missouri returns to Walton Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 19 to host Alabama at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
