MIZZOU READY FOR ROAD BATTLE AT No. 13 SOUTH CAROLINA
Mizzou Football (3-1 overall) begins defense of its 2013 SEC Eastern Division championship with their conference opener this Saturday as they play at the 13th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks (3-1 overall, 2-1 in SEC play). Kickoff for the game is set for 6 p.m. central time, with ESPN on the television call, with College GameDay alongside in Columbia, S.C.
The Tigers are looking to rebound from a last-second 31-27 home loss to Indiana last Saturday that dropped Mizzou from the ranks of the unbeaten. Mizzou was missing its playmaking captain, senior DE Markus Golden (hamstring injury), on defense, and his absence was missed as the Tigers couldn't get one last needed stop to preserve a 27-24 lead. After Mizzou drove for the lead on an Andrew Baggett 40-yard field goal with just 2:22 left, Indiana went 75 yards the other way, converting one 4th-and-6 from their own 29-yardline (on a pass interference penalty), on the way to a 3-yard TD run with just 0:22 seconds left in the game.
Mizzou was plagued by uncharacteristic mistakes in the loss to Indiana, as the Tigers were flagged for a season-high 10 penalties for 75 yards. In its previous three games, MU had only been penalized a total of 11 times for 99 yards. Additionally, the Hoosiers were mistake-free, as they did not commit a turnover, and that broke a string of 47 consecutive games (dating back to 2010) in which Mizzou's defense had forced a turnover (the nation's longest streak).
South Carolina has stormed back from a 52-28 season-opening loss to Texas A&M to post three impressive wins in a row over East Carolina, Georgia and Vanderbilt to put themselves back in the national conversation. They are coming off of a 48-34 win at Vanderbilt last week, and they'll be returning home to play their fourth home game in five outings to start the year.
MIZZOU-SOUTH CAROLINA SERIES HISTORY
The all-time series between Mizzou and South Carolina stands deadlocked at two wins apiece. The Gamecocks have won both matchups since the Tigers joined the SEC in 2012 - including a 31-10 win at South Carolina in 2012, followed by a dramatic 27-24 double-overtime win last year at Mizzou. The Tigers took a 17-0 lead into the 4th quarter in that game, only to see nemesis QB Connor Shaw come off the bench to engineer a comeback that forced overtime. Shaw converted a 4th-and-goal from the 15-yardline in the 1st overtime to send the game into a second extra period, and after South Carolina was held to a field goal, the Gamecocks walked off with the win as Mizzou's field goal to tie the game was no good from 24 yards away.
ROAD WARRIORS
Mizzou is looking to continue the good mojo on the road that it has enjoyed recently, as the Tigers have won six consecutive away games heading into Saturday's showdown at South Carolina. Mizzou went a sterling 5-0 on the road in 2013 (on the way to a 12-2 overall record), and combined with a 49-24 win at Toledo in game #2 this year, Mizzou has won six straight road games, and hasn't lost since ending the 2012 season at Texas A&M.
The 6-straight road wins is currently tied for the third-longest streak in school history. Here's a recap of Mizzou's longest road win streaks:
